For all future stain projects I highly recommend using a foam brush for application, don't use cheesecloth, tack cloth, paper towels, rags, socks or any other wipe-on method otherwise it'll take you six applications to get the stain color you want. If you had used a foam brush you wouldn't have needed more than 2 or 3 coats, tops.

I have a similar old bathroom vanity that I want to stain. Is it necessary to strip it all the way down or can you sand it just to make it a little rough? I'm told that cheap wood won't soak up the stain unless it's stripped. Your thoughts?

Yay! I'm so glad I stumbled on this blog post! I just picked up some gel stain for a kitchen table top and was so nervous that it wasn't going to get to the level of darkness that I wanted. Your step by step post gives me faith that with some handwork, it's possible! Your vanity looks so awesome, job well done! Looking forward to following your blog :) -Lindsey @ This Delightful Life
